Boko Haram: Government urged to involve UN in catering for displaced persons

Abuja - The Senate on Tuesday passed a resolution urging the Federal Government to involve the United Nations Committee on Refugees (UNCR) in providing relief to displaced people in the North East area.
This was sequel to a motion moved at plenary by Abdul Ningi (PDP-Bauchi).
Similarly, the Senate urged the affected state governments to deploy funds for the provision of relief materials for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP).
As a mark of solidarity, the senate agreed to donate N20 million as part of its contribution to assist the displaced persons.
Moving the motion, Ningi expressed discontentment on the effort of government In providing for the people sacked from their homes by activities of Boko Haram.
He said the neglect of the people at the crisis period had brought hardship on them.
"The motion seeks to call for the involvement of the international community to provide relief for our people.
"As it stands, the government is not doing enough to provide for the children, women and the all vulnerable caught in this crisis.
"Our people are scattered, the various camps provided for the emergency situation are now over stretched.
"They lack everything but misery, deprivation and hardship.
"The Boko Haram continues to ravage the villages and towns in the region, thereby increasing the number of these people. Our government may not be able to handle this alone,’’ he said.
Ali Ndume said efforts had been made to contact The UN country office to seek help, adding that the UN had insisted that Nigeria had the capacity to handle the situation.
"They have also told us that only Federal Government could approach the body for such assistance.
"The time has come for the Nigerian government to cater for the displaced people in the North-East,’’ he said.

According to him, nine local government areas, including his town, Gwosa, were badly affected.
"We urgently need succor for thousands of our people who are forced from their homes as a result of the usurpation of their lands by the Boko Haram terrorist group.
"Let me on behalf of the people of Borno-South Senatorial District, thank the Senate for considering this motion; we thought Nigerians have abandoned us in this war on us.
"I am aware that Section 41 (1) of the Constitution considers security and welfare for the people as the primary responsibilities of government,’’ Ndume said.
According to him, the displaced people take refuge in Chad, Cameroon and Niger Republic.
"The development is not good for the country which prides itself as the giant of Africa. It is affecting the people as well as the image of the country abroad,’’ he said.
