TECH:MTN Nigeria abandons the Android One data plan

Hey guys!! Remember when Infinix launched the Android One phone in collaboration with MTN Nigeria. As part of the deal, MTN offered all users of the Infinix Hot 2 1 GB of data for N500, which can be renewed over a period of 12 months.

It seems MTN have backed out from their initial offer, stating they can no longer continue. Normally, you send a text A1 to 131 to activate the plan. Here’s the new story when you text that command:
Sorry, in adherence to regulatory requirements, the Android One bundle has been withdrawn. Please dial *123*3# *123*4# for other exciting bundles offers. Thank you.
Here’s another reply to a tweet from MTN Nigeria’s handle:
It’s sad really. Many buyers of this device tried and failed to activate this plan on their phones. I never bothered. No thanks to our tweaking boys, who must’ve harvested the data even before the phone got to people’s hands. I still blame MTN for their laxity. Why announce a plan you know clearly doesn’t adhere to regulatory requirements? Come to think of it, did anyone here use this plan at all?
